Evergreen Review and Singapore Unbound Present: “Democratic Vistas”
National Poetry Month Reading, co-organized by the Evergreen Review and Singapore Unbound: Featuring Africa Wayne, Jerome Ellison Murphy, R. A. Villanueva, and Cat Fitzpatrick
In his pamphlet Democratic Vistas (1871), Walt Whitman scourges the hollowness at the heart of materialism and calls for a moral and spiritual renewal through the work of literature. We are again in a time of fantastic economic inequality and fascistic political takeover, and we call on poets and poetry to open again the highways and byways of democracy.

Poetry And The Word: A Discussion Of The Poetic Voice
Saints & Sinners Literary Festival, 2026, New Orleans
In this panel, we’ll discuss the unique power of the poetic voice, and how poetry can express truths and beauties that prose often cannot. Panelists will discuss ideas such as: What draws us to expressing ourselves through poetry? Is it a different space than the idea of story, and/or how can they align? In other words, what is best expressed poetically, and what conversely through prose? Is it about the present, a moment and the now versus a linear or time-determined narrative, or can it be a little of both? As well, we’ll look at poetic forms like villanelles, sonnets, and pantoums, along with rhyme, meter, and poetic structure. Panelists: Ramón Garcia, Michael Montlack, Jerome Ellison Murphy, Steven Reigns, and Brad Vogel.
